How it all
started
In 1991, we
took a closer look at some little children and teenagers who had already
experienced more than many adults could bear.
It was an uncanny discovery.
For the first time in our lives, we had seen a completely different world:
street girls, pickpockets, sewer dwellers, dens and glue-sniffing children with
no future.
This is how our street mission started.
At first, we
had meetings on the streets, in stairwells and at the station.
In December 1994
we found a derelict house opposite the train station in Katowice.
Entering it, we lit a candle and said a prayer to the Guardian Angels. This is
how the story of the Guardian Angels’ House begins.
In 1999 we
opened Street Workers’ Centre in Katowice Załęże.
In 2001 two
after-school clubs were established: in Katowice Śródmieście and Katowice Załęże.
In 2004 we
received a new building from the Katowice City Council. Apart from the two
after-school clubs, it housed a newly established Educational Centre for
preschool age children.
Wishing to share our experience and knowledge,
in 2006 we established the Children Aid
Foundation ‘Ulica’ (‘the Street’).
It offers training and support for people
whose work is helping children, teenagers and socially marginalized
families.
In 2009, Social
Therapy Youth Club was set up. We also widened the scope of activity of the
Family Counselling Centre.
We currently run a Prevention of Psychological
Problems Programme for Children, Young People and Their Families at Risk of
Social Marginalization in Katowice – Załęże through which we offer systemic aid
to children and families with serious educational, family and welfare
problems.
We were awarded
with honourable mention:
- for the best civil initiative in the Health
Protection, Social and Charitable Aid by the Committee of the ‘Pro Publico Bono’ Competition
held under the patronage of Jerzy Buzek
- in category 'philanthropy' in a second edition
of competition 'Slaskie na 5' organized
by Silesian Voivode. |
